design phases

My garden design method

1. Site analysis

At our first visit we consider the ecosystem, location, architectural context of the garden. Each garden is site-specific, based on its unique features, and incorporates the client’s taste and requests with what is suggested by the local environment and client.

2. Sketch plan – mood boards

The garden is an extension of the house, a room outdoor in which each space has a function or theme. The sketch plan lays out its architectural lines in a harmonious way, taking into account the flow between spaces and their exposure. The mood board illustrates its architectural and planting style. Once discussed with the client, modifications are entered in the final draft of the sketch plan and on this basis we can estimate the costs of execution.

3. Construction documents

The design is fine-tuned to provide the necessary documents for it to be built. These include: Setting-out plans for hard landscaping and any built element (walls, steps, paving); Planting plans, indicating the exact position and numbers of plants for each area; plans and elevations for any custom-made elements such as pergola or gazebo; lighting plans and other plans as necessary.

4. Plant choice and sourcing

A garden is brought alive by plants, living material which must be carefully chosen. Sustainability is crucial. I aim for drought tolerant plants which require minimal irrigation, and choose the plants most suitable for the location, resistant to pest and diseases, which require the least chemicals. Large lawns use up a lot of water and labor, but they can be reduced in size, and there are plenty of lawn alternatives. The garden should be a contribution to the environment.

5. Execution

As an independent garden designer, I can supply the documents to your architect, contractors or garden build firm of your choice, or I can recommend trusted professional firms who have built my gardens.
Planting out – I am personally there to put plants in position. It’s like putting paint on canvas, any modifications which may need to be made on site are the finishing touches which bring the whole painting together.

6. Finishing touches

Outdoor furniture, vases, sculptures, these are the final details which bring together the whole garden and give it style – and comfort. I can source these finishing touches from reliable suppliers, or have them custom-made for you. Tuscany has a rich tradition in pottery and a wealth of artisans. Sometimes I can find the right object at a younger firm, at a better price than in a more established and famous firm. As a designer, I can get discounts which are passed to the client.
