Giardino d’amor novo. Show garden
Sponsored by a nursery which produces annual decorative and aromatic plants, with a special interest in chili peppers and edible flowers, this is a play on medieval gardens, devoted to love – both sacred and profane. Monastic gardens are evoked in the small cloister-like space planted with strawberries, symbols of the Passion in religious paintings, yet also so sensual. The green benches could seat either the Madonna or shelter courting couples. Before them is low table laden with a feast of flowers, several of them with Christian symbolism, like carnation and pansy, and all of them edible, evoking the pleasures of the flesh. Recurring through this garden of love is chili pepper, like passion a multicoloured spice, fiery and potentially dangerous. This garden won First Prize at the 2012 Orticolario garden show.
